MAY 22, 2015
You closed up the house in October and the same ice cubes that were there then have sat in the freezer all winter long getting cozy with that piece of leftover fish you forgot about. I have no issue with a nice piece of cod, but I don’t want it flavoring my martini!
Emptying the ice tray periodically (especially after being away for a while) is something you may not think of, but it’s part of good fridge/freezer maintenance. Once you have emptied all of the old ice out of the bin it is a good idea to wash the bin with warm water and a few tablespoons of baking soda. This will further help ice from taking on freezer odors.
While you’re at it with the ice bin here are a few more fridge/freezer maintenance items that are wise to do at the beginning of the season:
– Change all water filters
– Remove food and wipe down all trays and doors with the same water and baking soda solution.
– Put a new box of baking soda in the back corners of both the fridge and freezer. There are also charcoal items available that do the same
job as a box of baking soda. They are more expensive, but are usually a bit nicer looking than that orange box!
Now that your fridge/freezer is refreshed and your ice is replaced, break open the vodka and shake yourself a cold martini…hold the fish!
